Volvo seems to be on the long road to recovery. While sales continued to slip into the United States, the figures have increased worldwide last year. In an interesting twist, as 2014 was the first year more Volvos were sold in China than in North America. This could be due to Volvo effect since had been more focused on their only European new compact sedan and station wagon. 2016 showers finally some Swedish love of America with a complete overhaul of the XC0, the SUV originally designed to we . Because China is now a bigger market than us, XC0 is not just for us but for China and the growing number of large crossovers clogs Europe.
Exterior
The Volvo DNA is undeniable, but an Audi influence is also evident. While I recognize that I love the Audi design language, I am a little saddened very distinct style of the original Volvo S80 parts, S60 and XC0 continue to be softened over time.
At the front is a flat bolder grille (through regulation of pedestrian impact), LED distinctive headlamps and optional front overhang shorter than ever. The shortest overhang is possible because this is the first Volvo in ages, designed to accept only 4-cylinder or smaller engines under the hood. At the rear, the distinctive Swedish hips are almost gone, replaced by a more sloping profile that is more aggressive, but less extraordinary. The Audi influence is most apparent at the rear where the US-bound models get flashing red instead of amber blinkers found on the European model. While Audi is supposedly change the orange to red because the EU yellow lights do not cover enough area, the Volvo switch is purely aesthetic.
inside
Until the new lands Q7 and we can look inside the new XC0 is the best interior without exception in the sector. After entering a Range Rover Sport after the event, I can safely say the Volvo compares well with the higher category. Momentum hubcaps make do with injection molding door and dashboard components, while the registration models slather everything at hand in acres of cowhide trim more than Jaguar modern and simple style which is significantly Scandinavian. (What is surprising, since the lead architect interior is American.)
The new SUV gets first full redesign of Volvo headquarters in ages. Swedish thrones have long had impressive ergonomics reputation, but refreshment was late. The new design allows 4-way lumbar, adjustable side bolsters, cushions and extending ventilation thigh in addition to heating. I could not sample the seat base less capable, but 8 hours in the high-end model confirms Volvo has improved the setting without sacrificing comfort and legendary support.
Hop in the back and you'll notice the XC0 length may have increased over time, but the internal height is actually in some measures. This makes the third line very unusual. The seats are some of the most comfortable mother-in-law row seats I had the pleasure of serving, but the margin limits their usefulness for under 5'8. The cargo area is surprisingly generous behind the third row with enough space to stuff rolls in bags along the way, but I suspect most people will keep the seats folded as well. If this describes your typical third row use, you may want to put pressure on Volvo for the accoutrements of the seats in the image below.
As we have all heard, drivers are cheap in China and being driven is preferred to conduct. To meet this growing segment of Chinese society, Volvo XC0 will build excellence, which can be done either model 3 or 4 places. No, Volvo did not bring one to enjoy the event, but I mention it because the concept seemed to come out in left field when I saw the blog posts about it in the last few weeks. After experiencing the new interior, however, I must say that it makes sense. All except the steering wheel airbag cover is competitive Range Rover and I would not mind seeing a variation of 5 places with a little more "plush" in the back. Just call it something other than "XC0 Excellency." Please.
Infotainment
Volvo placed a 9.3-inch touch screen in the middle of the dashboard, which acts more like a computer tablet of a traditional infotainment system. The display works makes it a little easier than ginormous 17-inch model from Tesla, but it is much less elegant. The overall concept allows data four "zones" different to coexist on the screen simultaneously, customizable by the user. To interact with them, you touch the option, and it expands while reducing others. This allows you to see the map and your next turn directions also seeing your media information, fuel economy, vehicle condition and other relevant bits of the navigation system. Touch responses were lightning fast, as the latest tablet computers. The system offers levels iDrive-like adjustment and customization of vehicles.
More on the driver's side is a new LCD instrument cluster and all-gigantic 12.3 inches. The design of the gauge is elegant and well appointed with almost 1/3 of the screen is for your media functions or a navigation map even if a destination is not set. I would say that the new Volvo View is on par with the new Mercedes S-Class and before the Jaguar and Land Rover with disco dashes in design. Speaking of JLR products, I have a complaint: like disco English dashes, Volvo has little ability to customize the screen outside of colors and gauge some minor changes. Although GM has only four different configurations to choose from Cadillac CUE, which is three more than Volvo and looks are all different.
security
2016, Volvo retains most of its security systems, updates several of them and adds some new for good measure. The usual suspects - as a plethora of airbags and anti-whiplash seats - are standard. The autonomous braking system City Safety Volvo gets under revision covers. Previously, the system came in two different versions: the basic version is based solely on a laser scanner and a camera to detect traffic and the second version was delivered with adaptive cruise control using a radar sensor to extend the cover for pedestrians and cyclists. This generation of City Safety does not increase above 31 mph speeds, but the radar sensor and expanded detection is now standard, is a software tweak to improve prevention of accidents in intersections. The new radar sensor replaces the laser scanner is in the same enclosure behind the rearview mirror. The new location is less sensitive to the accumulation of ice or cold weather with snow and packaging can reduce repair costs minor accidents.
The security seems to be a game of diminishing returns, so that new systems focus on the upper hanging fruit. The run off-road protection uses the camera City Safety to determine if you leave the road surface. If you do, the new belt tensioners and you pull up a distorting seat frame that when you launch into the air and the earth, the forces of the spine is reduced by 1/3. There is also a rear collision warning that lets you know a DUI is about to plow into your rear end. The system will tend seatbelts, flashing hazard lights to draw attention to the other driver, and use the brakes to keep the car under control during and after the collision.
Training
As announced, Volvo started their engines 5 and 6 cylinders of the border with the new XC0. Although there are a selection of engines available in the EU, the only one that makes the United States is the 2.0L turbocharged and supercharged direct-injection four-cylinder. In the platform of SPA, there is a bit more space for the plumbing. Thus, power is up slightly from the XC60 Drive-E to 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, almost the equal of the BMW N55 in most tunes. The only transmission is an 8-speed automatic Aisin. All T6 models get a standard Haldex AWD system that will send up to 50 percent of available power to the rear whenever he wants. And, depending on the situation, the system sends up to 80 percent of the power to the rear axle so a front wheel slips. If you need more power, Volvo does not give you a bigger engine; they add a hybrid system in addition to the turbo-supercharger and the. Say what? You heard that right, the XC0 T8 is a plug-in turbocharged and supercharged 400-horsepower hybrid.
The Volvo hybrid system is thematically similar to Acura RLX hybrid. Things start with the same engine of 316 hp and automatic 8 reports that the T6, but they stuck a 46 hp, 103 lb-ft electric starter / motor / generator between the converter and the motor torque. Engineers abandoned the Haldex AWD so they can stuff a 9.3 kWh lithium ion water-cooled in the tunnel between the front seats. The mechanical AWD is replaced by a 87 hp, 177 lb-ft electric motor connected to the rear axle sending power through a fixed 10: 1 gear reduction. With a maximum discharge rate of 87 hp battery, the power and torque curves combine to give the driver 400 ponies and 475 lb-ft of torque. (Official US figures are not final.) If you live in the snow belt, you need to know while the T6 can send 158 hp to the rear on a whim, 87 is the most you'll ever get in T8. If this sounds like systems eAWD Lexus and Acura, you are right, so expect similar performance snow and ice.

I was honestly a little surprised Volvo has designed a new suspension system for the SPA platform and more everything else. Instead of MacPherson struts, Volvo is double wishbone front by producing a positive impact on handling. At the rear, the XC0 features one great spring composite blade in the multi-link independent suspension. The design of the rear suspension (except for the leaf spring portion) is quite similar to that used in the new Jaguar XE. Logical, since both were launched while Volvo and Jaguar are owned by Ford. The new design makes it easier to integrate the four corners optional air suspension fitted on all XC0 during the test event. The new suspension design, the front end lighter and wider tires Volvo has ever put in a production car (275 width) improve handling as expected.
This puts the XC0 closer to the X5 or the MDX QX60 in terms of grip. Comparable configured, the X5 manage XC0 through dynamic weight balance better and RWD. But the XC0 is cheaper. So configured for a similar price , the Volvo will probably win. Speaking of price, the XC0 and the price of almost identical MDX. Although the XC0 starts above $ 48,00, it comes with standard AWD and the Acura does not. Similarly configured an MDX Advance and XC0 Momentum (with appropriate options) end only $ 100 to share a decent discount vs Euro other options.
The all-new XC0 features an all new. front and rear frames, including a double wishbone front suspension
engineers are calling a second time 0-60 6.1 - at the same time announced by BMW for the X5 in both RWD and AWD forms. Unfortunately I could not test the Volvo 0-60. To return to our newspapers, I found that 2015 X5 xDrive35i is the only BMW in recent memory to take more to reach 60 BMW claimed. The X5 hit 60 after 6.5 seconds, which means the Volvo can be a bit faster. Check back for full specifications when we get our hands on one for a full review. Add the hybrid material and Volvo said 0-60 drops to 5.7 seconds -. Notably faster than the QX60 hybrid (7.1), but a far cry from the X5 4.4L turbo (4.7)
Numbers aside, the little engine in the XC0 certainly has a different feel from that of the motor 3.0L in the BMW. end low idle torque is then very late. Passing torque is excellent at most speeds and high speeds the engine feels a bit more breath than larger travel options.
The XC0 is not a game changer for Volvo in America. It can not be. A brand is more than one car. However, if the XC0 is a window on the future of Volvo, so I have high hopes. If the Swedes can do fairly quickly throughout their range, they can also recover their US sales figures. This kind of inner quality in vehicle size 3-series C-class would give even the new and tasty all a run for its money. Just two things their way: a lack of marketing to let the Audi buyers know there is a better crossover for sale and disturbing thought it may still be 12 years until it was redesigned XC0. If you're shopping for a luxury 3-line and does not give the XC0 a look, you are missing out on a tasty meatball.
Volvo provided the vehicle at a luncheon event.
