it is no secret that Honda seeks to provide a "Goldilocks-just-right" option in almost all segments - not too big, not too small; not too cheap, not too expensive; not too flashy, not too bland, and with practice spoonful on top. This formula resulted in a range of commercial success with some exceptions. Curiously, back to America for Honda HR-V is one of those exceptions

Based on figures GoodCarBadCar, the Jeep Renegade is outselling the HR-V in a clip 1 4: 1 so far this year. Buick moved even more Encores - correctly - that Honda sold HR-Vs

What gives.? Do buyers CUV subcompact Honda abandoned? Good Renegade? Or is there another explanation?

Although the HR-V has existed in other markets for some time in 2015 was the first-year US sales. Just as the driver is loosely based on the Accord and the CR-V is loosely based on the Civic, HR-V bones come with the Honda Fit's permission.

Of course, Honda does not tolerate GM sharing the platform style, so there are few "Fit" visible to the naked eye. Honda has not only raise the Fit and add a rear differential. Instead, he reached Fit platform until there was almost nothing left of the original. Compared to the compact hatch, the HR-V is 9.1-inches longer, wider 2.8-inch and 3.2-inch larger. But it is not only a larger box on the same rollerskate, Honda also extended the wheelbase by 3.2 inches and raised the 2.1-inch track front and 2.6 in the back.

Thanks to the stretch job, the HR-V weighs 300 more pounds in the balance front-wheel-drive Fit a comparable, and the batteries of the AWD system as an option on another 162 pounds. In an attempt to offset the curb weight 3109 pounds resulting Honda left the 1.5-liter four-cylinder back and brought into the 1.8-liter four-pot of the last generation Civic. Although 141 horsepower and 127 lb-ft of high engine torque of 130 horsepower and 114 lb.-ft. of the Fit, the extra punch is not enough to maintain the balance of power-to-weight under control.

versions wheel drive LX trim buyers can choose between a manual six-speed and a continuously variable transmission, but only in. Selection AWD or any other level of finish makes CVTs the only choice. As much as I would like a manual transmission, the CVT is better suited to the HR-V, improving both acceleration and fuel economy. Fuel economy starts at 28 miles per gallon combined with manual and jumps to 31 mpg combined with the CVT. Adding AWD CVT lower average, but it still beats going to the HR-V manual by 1 mpg.

While Jeep has opted for a wild interpretation of Ye Olde Cherokee and Wrangler for its entry level crossings, Honda chose a style that resembles a bloated Fit . The look is not as sexy as the Mazda CX-3, or polarizing Nissan Juke, but fortunately it is not as dowdy as the Chevrolet Trax is. Instead, Honda has played safe with simple lines, some curves, and slightly square back. While HR-Vs in other global markets get sexier projectors, US-bound models have to do with halogen beams on each plate.

Instead of scaling in the internal CR-V or inflate the Fit to fit the larger HR-V, Honda has chosen a new theme that seems to be part Honda and Audi 5000 part of the air vents bank on the passenger side, it seems, is to compensate for the lack of air inlets at the rear of the cab. Rear passengers did not complain, but people sitting in the front seat had occasional headaches ice cream

Hop in a base model and you'll notice something unusual :. it is less hard plastic in reach of the driver or front passenger than the competition. Pictured above, the light parts on the dashboard and doors is made of pleather. Down range covers, pleather that is exchanged for the fabric that matches the seats. The result is a cabin that feels more premium than the price tag suggests, making it easily one of the more upscale options in the segment.

Thanks to the tire-traction, the HR-V is more passenger friendly than the Fit, easily swallow four adults in comfort with a margin to spare. Pop the rear hatch and you will find a load space which is 240 percent more, 24.3 cubic feet, than Mazda CX-3. Thank you to a floor based on the Fit hatchback, the rear seat back and fold in a variety of ways, making cargo ship carrying more convenient. Fold the rear seats down and you have access to 58.8 cubic feet of storage widget, a figure that is only 2 shy cubic feet of much larger Hyundai Tucson. Unlike baby Zoom-Zoom, the HR-V is capable of transporting our descendants then schlepping their stuff.

Our tester was the top EX-L trim range, which means that we got heated leather seats, a touch -button only climate system control area, navigation software, and satellite radio. Although the touchscreen infotainment system appears to be identical to the system of Civic 2016, it has more in common with the previous generation Civic. This means you will not find Apple or Android Auto carplay support in this cabin. Unfortunately, power seats or adjustable lumbar support are not offered on a plate.

With more weight to carry around by horsepower than the Fit or Civic, it should not be a surprise that the HR-V is the vehicle slow Honda sold in the US for some time. Although the CVT and AWD system adds weight, the 9.5-second sprint to 60 is faster than the lightest model with the manual. Once upon a time, a second set of 9.5-60 was perfectly acceptable. However, only four of over 220 cars that I have driven in the past four years have been slower; Toyota Yaris, Volkswagen E-Golf and Ram ProMaster City company are ominous for sure, but it takes a Mini Clubman just as long.

On the other hand, the Honda CVT is simply the best transmission cogless you can buy. The transitions between high and low ratios are faster and sharper than any of the competition, making it feel more like an automatic staged both. "Changes manuals" using the optional shift paddles are more credible than any other vehicle in CVT-equipped, but they will not help the HR-V speed on freeway on-ramps faster.

What makes the dull acceleration of HR-V more frustrating is how the rest of the vehicle was introduced. The steering ratio is surprisingly fast, the suspension is almost impossible to reverse, and there are as steering reactions that you find in the current Honda Fit. In fact, the HR-V logically leads as a Fit that won a few hundred pounds and has a bit more body roll. The softer side of HR-V makes it well suited for everyday use. Longer road trips will be more at ease in something like a CR-V, however, because the short wheelbase of the HR-V can "bob" a little on the floor washboard.

Many cars there need more shove, but some feel like they could handle it without modifications. The HR-V is different. Although there is more roll than the Mazda CX-3, it is just as easy to throw the HR-V in a corner. There is a similar level of steering feel between the two and, at 125 feet from 60 to zero, the HR-V actually stopped shorter than the Mazda baby. Hopefully Honda finds a way to put the turbo engine of the new Civic in this hood.

Prices start at $ 20,115 (after destination) for the base model with a manual transmission. Honda CVT comes with a $ 800 check box option and an additional sum of $ 1,300 adds AWD system. Unlike some of the competition, Honda only offers three different trim levels and maintains the narrow price range with a spread of just bottom up to $ 6,700.

The HR-V is not the fastest, sexiest, the best handling and best off-road entry in this segment. On the other hand, it is one of the best most practical options prices more comfortable. Jeep Renegade can have a low starting price, but it will be at least $ 1,500 more than the HR-V when you add air conditioning and an automatic transmission. To equip the renegade comparable to an EX HR-V with the CVT, the Jeep will be $ 3,0 more. Similarly, the Mazda CX-3 and the Chevy Trax end up more expensive than a comparably equipped Honda by a decent margin.

Obviously, the HR-V has what it takes to be a big problem in the subcompact segment crossover. He is not very fast, but it excels at what the big buyers in this segment say they are looking for: a, CR-V smaller cheaper with a crazy cargo transport capacity. So why is not it the top selling item in the segment? Because Honda literally can not build them fast enough.

Until Mark Stevenson told me about Ward's deep dive into Honda's production numbers, I thought something was wrong with the world. As it stands, the factory Honda HR-Vs built as quickly as possible

apart Production constraints, I have a real problem with the HR-V :. The CR-V. child Honda medium is not as easy to park, but it is faster, more comfortable, more attractive, manages to maintain more luggage (65% more), and it is almost as effective . While it is also more expensive, I think the upgrade CR-V is worth every penny. If you're shopping in this segment, my advice boils down to this: The HR-V is the most convenient option for families and convenient, the CX-3 is more fun - but I'd probably buy the CR V.
