A year and a half, I was driving the new-for-2015 Hyundai Sonata in the "" Limited trim. I thought it was a good choice, if not particularly exciting, the family sedan market increasingly important. During the same press trip, Hyundai gave me a chance to drive the "Sport" trim and "Eco" of the Sonata, but there was no basic model inventory on hand. This was not by accident, and there is also not uncommon. Offering non-car options for journosaurs which are continually spoiled by flying first class and the metallic appearance of chocolates in the form of the logo "Ruf" is a great way to wind up as the target of a wobble Burgess.
Imagine my delight, then, when I got off my (coach class) flight to Portland last month and found a Sonata If waiting for me. My route, which was centered around the 1, but also include a 140-mile highway trip from Salem, OR and back, promised to be just the ticket to a truly independent assessment, the CAPD-style rental . After all, some cars are pretty decent in all their diverse and varied alternatives, while others can not cut the mustard without the big engine and high-end options. Where does the Sonata SE fall on that spectrum?
Well ... we'll get the usual excuses of the road. This car-2016 model year had 33,700 miles on it. miles rentals are hard miles. We all know. My sainted Accord V6 coupe, which I'm sure none of you ever get the slightest bit tired of talking to me, continues to look and feel fresh enough to make 33,000-mile, but I treat with care I condition the leather and rarely run 125 miles per hour on a race track. I should also mention that Hyundai-earth, "SE" means "base model, in which there is only despair and Elantras." It starts at $ 21.750 eminently reasonable, and for that money you get any of aluminum wheels in a 7-inch color touch screen. There is real value here.
Okay, excuse the time is over. For about $ 5,500 more, you can get the Limited. There is probably less of a difference than the actual transaction price. Let's say four large, give or take. A couple of dollars a day if you buy more than sixty months. My friend, as Hamlet says, look to 't . Better to spend a little more and get a really complete car.
In SE trim, the Sonata is simply strong inside. Much of Oregon uses a global highway surface remarkably noisy, which rotates inside admittedly capacious of the Sonata in a cacophonous bell in which to scream to be heard. Even on the quietest roads, however, there is still much room junk bounce around the cockpit for any kind of conversation with the rear passengers.
This vaunted strength I remember my press car trip? Let's go. Squeak, hump and punch are the order of the day. Remember, dear reader, that this car had received abuse value of more than thirty thousand miles on rough roads. Yet I do not want a car to be loose after this less than a year, no matter what the conditions might be. There was a visible wear on all contact surfaces and door cards, in particular, were worn shiny by the elbows and fingers of two hundred indifferent tenants.
upscale Sonatas get a sound system good enough, but the SE gives you the bare minimum. Of course, you get six speakers instead of Layout retro four speakers in the Sport Accord, but it does not look good and it is not going strong. The Bluetooth integration on this particular car was not satisfied with my Galaxy S5 iPhone or S-something my companion. Speaking of my companion; at one point, after the annoying flashing turn hilarious noise was repeated for about 30 seconds, she began holding his hands over his ears and crying silently. I do not blame her. "The only turn signal," she said, "would be enough to ensure that I bought this piece of crap."
When I arrived in the company 2.4, I said that the powertrain "really disappointing," and that the disappointment was amplified in sE. The engine always feels tired, the transmission is always a shift behind where it should be, and NVH is inexcusably rude. To make matters worse, the tires fitted to the SE are indifferent steer and a bit capricious in wet braking. It just does not inspire confidence and it feels solid behind my generation Accord in virtually all the dynamic qualities
Some good points :. The trunk is huge. There is plenty of room for adults oversized front and rear. By the standards of the class, the greenhouse is well ventilated. Nothing fell during my training. The various buttons and levers remained very supportive despite the abuse hire. There is a car relatively easy to use. It has a long warranty.
The Sonata SE must exist, because some people shop on price and Hyundai passed a reasonable volume of cars to rental companies. But is less than the sum of its parts. There is not much cheaper than the Accord LX or base Camry and it is much less pleasant to use than any of those well known alternatives. I am also concerned that Hyundai has not really crack the problem of long-term sustainability, based on the appearance of different surfaces and materials in this less-than-one-year-old car.
Honestly, if you are willing to take some risks to sustainability, why not get the Ford Fusion "S" instead? It is incredibly stylish, it incorporates all the latest trends in European design, and the night its LED taillights standard blaze through the night with stylish, sexy authority ... ok, I'll just try to upset a couple of our most vocal commentators here. Speaking seriously, though, this Sonata is intermediate between uncomfortable Camcords undeniably strong and undeniably beautiful Fusion. Think of it as taking a Korean USA-built on the Altima. It is large, and it is spacious, but not refined and does not feel like it is machined from solid nothing .
If you are really interested in the Sonata, take a look at one of the variants put spec. If all you want is a good $ 22,000 family sedan, I do not think this is your first choice.
