Today, we run two reviews of the GMC Canyon in exactly the same time - a V6 and 4-cylinder - for your reading pleasure. If ever there was a time to compare the same truck with different powertrains (and two examiners with different perspectives), it is

start this review with a disclaimer :. I do not understand pickup trucks.

Having lived all my life near a large city, I simply do not understand the need or the call of the truck. To me, they are vehicles working with cramped cabins and no trunks. Cumbersome and inefficient, too. They were great when I was working construction at the university, where we loaded the bed with shit and trailered behind a compact loader, but I can not understand why anyone would choose to lead a daily pick-up . But two million Americans buy pickups every year, so they must know something I do not.

The first thing about the average size Canyon (and his twin Chevy Colorado) is there nothing medium about it, measuring about along with mid-0s Ford F-150 and much larger than its ancestor Sonoma as professionally eyeballed by me when the two trucks were parked nearby. Have you not been pick-up in the last decade? Go sit in. They are huge! GM is betting that for thousands of buyers of full-size trucks are simply too big, they will not cry for a V8, either. This is in stark contrast to Ford and RAM that chose to go big and only offer full-size trucks, but with more interesting engine choices.

Unlike full-size trucks, where the cabin feels surprisingly wide and we need to stretch to adjust the radio controls or climate, Canyon cabin just feels right. There is plenty of room in all directions for the driver and front passenger. The overall interior design is simple and easy to use, with all the switches and controls exactly where you expect them to be. Visibility is good, but those who are not used to microphones can find parking and reversing a little intimidating - it's longer than most SUVs vehicle. Interestingly, while the windows, door locks and driver seat have propulsion controls, the exterior mirrors on the basis of truck do not.

The lower trim level model had the optional audio system IntelliLink with a wide angle rearview camera, Bluetooth, and USB and auxiliary audio inputs. It also came with an application to listen to Pandora on your phone that worked very well. However, he did not have satellite radio and the system was not too happy that my application streaming phone. Part of that upgrade the audio system is OnStar, including buttons on the rearview mirror, I accidentally called him while adjusting my perspective.

Not surprisingly, the rear seats of this additional cab model are useless for anyone over five feet tall, but my seven year old daughter and her friends liked sitting there; they do not even need booster seats. big baby Recaro seat of my three year old son amazingly managed to fit there and he was even room for his little legs when the front seat was on the midpoint on its slopes. If you are serious about having more than one passenger in the canyon, I strongly suggest the Crew Cab model.

For those insisting on the extended cab model, which should really be called regular cab because there is no classical regular cab offered, GM has an interesting solution to the bulky car seats. Removing the headrest of the rear jump seat and insert it into the bottom cushion extends the length of the cushion, giving the infant seat more support. Strangely, I do not see it written in the owner's manual and I realized while writing this review.

The best use of the space behind the front seat, however, is that storage. In my time with the Canyon, I had to drop three cans of things to donate place. I put them in the bed in the morning. Noon, I had to move inside the cabin because of the rain. When I took my daughter to school, I had again to move the boxes into the bed When I parked the truck for the night, I had to move the boxes inside the cab again because I'm not in the gift of place during the day. I understand that the secondary market offers a ton of caps and lids bed but a lockable, watertight "trunk-in-bed" like the Honda Ridgeline or RAM boxes makes sense.

the extended cab model is available only with a 6'2 "bed, while the Crew Cab is available with 5'2" or 6'2 "bed whatever bed you choose, it will be 57.8 "wide to floor with 44.4" between the well-wheel, and 20.9 "deep. A plywood sheet should be transported above the wheel housings, with a tailgate open long bed models. There is a light in the bed, which is very bright, and very useful measures integrated into the rear bumper as on Sierra / Silverado. Portions Convenience group is an EZ Lift-and-Down tailgate using an internal torsion bar and a damper for easy opening and closing. It works great. While the tailgate is locked, it is not connected to the vehicle's central locking system.

The vehicle for this test was equipped with the DOHC four-cylinder 2.5-liter making 0 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque. The rear wheel drive version is adapted myself to a manual transmission, but the vast majority of buyers will likely opt for the automatic excellent. I think GM has always done a great job of programming their automatic transmissions and here they do not disappoint. This transmission does not have much to work with, however, as this engine seems inadequate for duty in the 4100 truck pounds.

The truck was well within the relaxed driving around town or cruising on the highway. However, when the road becomes hilly or passing a road is necessary, he shouted for more power with the accelerator pedal to the floor. Like most trucks on the road, the bed of the mine was empty. I can not imagine anything carry an important weight or towing with it at highway speeds. If it were a car, I would say that his four-cylinder engine seems a little rude, too, but he gets a pass as truck engine.

This combination of engine, transmission, and chassis is EPA-rated to achieve 19 mpg city and 25 mpg on the highway. According to the onboard computer, I am 19 mpg driving at a leisurely pace from Boston to New York City and 17 mpg on the way back driving with a heavier foot. Everything was done driving at night with little traffic. The difference between the figures of the real world and EPA is quite striking in this case and feels like it's because this little engine had to work much harder than the V6 would be in its place. The maximum payload for this truck is 1470 lbs. If she had a trailer hitch, as should all the microphones, it would be classified Canyon to tow 3,500 lbs. A model with a V6 Tow Package can tow up to 7000 pounds.

The basic 4-GMC Canyon Extended Cab 2WD cylindeer starts under $ 22,000 with the designation fee. The vehicle for this review, a 4-cylinder, 4-wheel drive, extended cab has a starting price of $ 27,935. The Convenience Package is $ 50; Spray plant on bed liner is $ 475; and the upgraded audio system is $ 275. MSRP total for this vehicle, with destination charge, is $ 30,0. A fully loaded V6 4WD extended cab with a long bed model can clear $ 45,000.

full-size pickups, especially the quad-cab models with beds covered with short, have become the great modern American sedans. They may even look like sedans from some angles and interior can be a call option to compete with luxury sedans. But despite what some manufacturers claim, full-size pickups are not for everyone and there is a good business model to sell smaller trucks like Toyota has proven over many decades. GM saw splits on the highest volume market and fills it with what seems to be a big step if small truck.
