In 1919, when Army Major Dwight D. Eisenhower embarked on a journey with a transcontinental military convoy to show the country mechanical power used to conquer the Kaiser.
from Washington DC to San Francisco, Eisenhower crossed the highway Lincoln over 62 days. The course was relatively easy to Kansas, but the hardest, he wrote, came to Utah.
"20 August (1919) Departed Salt Lake City, 6:30. ... Last 6 miles trail was natural desert dust and sand up to 2 alkaline (feet) deep, with many chuckholes . No rain for 18 weeks and extremely difficult traction, "Eisenhower wrote in his journal.
" 22 August (1919) Departed Granite Rock (Utah) 6:30 ... Personal totally exhausted by the efforts huge and rest at Black Point. ... Reduced morale. "
Certainly my travel in 2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek would be less dramatic. In Utah, Eisenhower reported the convoy of 80 vehicles took 7.5 hours to 15 miles in the quasi-biblical sand . instead of the bad roads I could manage 80 miles per hour in the diminutive hatchback with 148 horsepower. -? which probably more power than all of 1919 convoy Resemblance I have some
(at least my five-speed manual, five compact wagon door was colored Subaru called "Desert Khaki," a color resembling a faded brown greenish fatigue. That must count for something , right?)
You could say I'm partly retracing the steps of Eisenhower on his training course, but I'd say I put the Crosstrek through the toughest test I could imagine - carry a book of 1000, loaded U-haul in the Rocky Mountains. (Actually, I moved my girlfriend on the Rockies in Denver, vehicle towing less likely imaginable.)
To be honest, I drove by a Crosstrek XV " Jurassic Park "in Hawaii and another in the middle of Iceland in a blizzard. I was not concerned about the performance of Crosstrek far as I am concerned for my patience: US 6 south Prix has all the visual charm of a sopping wet bath mat
Interestingly, very few are purchased with Crosstreks. a manual transmission. As the famous carmaker its biggest ever sales month success for the Crosstrek in July (over 8,500 sold in the United States, nearly three times more BMW X3 sold in the same period) excessively less and less them are line-you- own variety.
This is against-intuitive for a car that has earned him a representative to have less strength than the League of Nations. You would think that buyers would snatch the last drop of power from the small busy mill.
So manual five speeds appropriate for towing and fully control the 148 horsepower powered by horizontally opposed four cylinder Subaru engine, I went along Interstate 80.
the most useful statistic: Seats down, the XV Crosstrek manages 51.9 cubic feet of cargo space, which is less than a Jeep Cherokee and Kia Sportage, but more useful, given its wide opening and rear folding seats. That's enough room to install a closet full of clothes, a TV, three backpacks, dogs and snacks purchased in a daze Harmon near Highway
Our Crosstrek stacked on extras too :. 6.2 inch multimedia display with Bluetooth, subwoofer, heated seats and trailer hitch with 4-pin connector. The Beverly Hillbilly special, I think the package is called.
All that matters very little when you have a 500-mile drive with a trailer of 1,000 pounds and a puppy 50 pounds to carry. The most useful measure? The interior drama without your horse chugs along the road.
from best to worst the Crosstrek ranges somewhere in the middle when it comes to interior comfort. When it was introduced, the Crosstrek was stronger within a narrow cellblock Louisiana (do not ask me how I know), but Subaru has since added more noise deadening material to calm things down. On the road, pulling a trailer, the Crosstrek managed to keep a drone subject that we ended passages southeastern Utah.
The rise of the hill? Well, that's another story.
Not Eisenhower retrace the steps exactly, I opted for Interstate 70 instead of I-80, over the Rocky Mountains, dating back more than 11,000 feet before descending into the Mile High City.
At altitude, the Crosstrek is straining for oxygen to ignite. His furious motor is out of breath all clean for him (probably ridiculous) charging a mountain and back down. The ability to pull my own relationship with the five-speed manual would be my saving grace, I thought.
I figured wrong. In fact, it was not the engine that kept the Crosstrek easily run the mountain and down, it was my research gear that proved difficult. The Crosstrek never dipped below 40 mph or second gear, but this would probably have improved if I had the benefit of working computers for me. continuously variable transmission of Crosstrek may be joyless as a civic education class, but at least it keeps the engine permanently in his sweet spot. I can not say the same for myself.
The results? More than 1,0 miles of pipe in two days with a load on the half and a puppy with a load on all the way, and Crosstrek managed just over 24 mpg. Oh, and he did.
Eisenhower could say the same thing. But his journey took 62 days and was so bad, he created the Interstate Highway System in 1956 - which included I-80 -. So nobody should do it again
The Crosstrek has strength. Maybe not enough to win a war, but at least he won that battle.
