Amateurs. BMW claim that ruined the series 3 when they redesigned the sedan in 2012. "F30" became bigger, bigger, softer and more gadget filled than ever before. BMW fanbois cried in their Gemüsesuppe, Road & Track called an "also ran" ... BMW and laughed all the way to the bank.

For 2016, the 3-Series facelift, new engines and a redesigned suspension. What is not changed, however, is the new direction of BMW. And that's a good thing in my book.

Exterior

The 3 Series has grown so much over the years it is just an inch shy of a 1998 series 5. American and Chinese buyers who love big cars are driving this growth trend. You can even get a tense 3 Series in China. And the latest 3 series does nothing to curb this growth.

Instead, BMW stuck to its usual process to refine its design instead of replacing it. The twisted front bumper is so subtle that I should refer to BMW's PR website to confirm the bumper is completely new. Headlights, however, are a welcome change with the 340i now obtain excellent BMW LED complete modules. At the rear, new rear lights and bumper mild tweaks join the party. This means that the 3 Series is always the simple but elegant entry in its segment. It is not as visually exciting as a Cadillac ATS or as jarring as the Lexus IS350 F-Sport, but it is likely to age better than TLX Acura or Infiniti Q50.

inside

changes inside are equally subtle. The cup holders earn a hinged lid instead of the silly tea they had before. BMW has also added a more ambient light, strips some extra chrome and a refreshed color palette.

As before, all models except for the M3 start with "leather" and you have to pony up $ 1.450 if you want the real cow. On the other hand, BMW continues to offer some of the most comfortable and adjustable seats in segment.340i models start with 10 power-adjustable front "sport" of BMW seats with side air bolsters, lumbar support four lanes and 'cushion extension thigh. You can option-sports seats without charge if they are too strengthened to your taste.

Although other in this segment appear more room for rear seat leg on paper there is more usable space in the series 3 almost all competitors - except for Q50 - due to the overall shape of the interior. BMW also gives you 13 cubic feet of trunk space, which is above average for the segment.

I'm surprised that BMW has not had the opportunity to discuss several interior panels for cooler parts, especially the plastic questionable under the climate control unit. This interior is more luxurious and more consistent in style as the Lexus or Infiniti Q50, but the new Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class have moved the bar further than expected. Hopefully BMW notes.

Infotainment

Although some giant multi Jams companies screens in the dashboard in their basic models, BMW continues load enthusiasts additional gadget. Even 340i starts with iDrive base system 6.5 inch BMW that provides basic USB and Bluetooth integration. If you want the sleek 8.8-inch LCD screen seen in our model, you need to either get the $ 2,750 Technology package - which also includes the heads up display and BMW Apps Smartphone - or you can select the $ 1,950 stand alone navigation option. The USB integration and enhanced application is also available separately for $ 350. Following the current application enables Facebook, tweeter and Internet radio streams from your iPhone to the car radio.

iDrive wins for the most expensive infotainment system in this small segment again, but the latest iDrive software is also the most feature rich. good taste high resolution graphics system, fast interface and superior phone integration, intuitive touch controller with input and voice recognition software are more polite than MMI Audi or even the latest Mercedes COMAND system finger write -. if you can afford it

Training

BMW is in the midst of a brand overhaul drivetrain to scale and it takes a while for this to filter down to America. In the EU, BMW replaced the N20 four-cylinder engined with a new modular design (B48) shared with Mini. Yet the 320i and 328i engines remain unchanged in America.

Never mind that for now. We are here to talk about the new 340i, which replaced the outgoing 335i.

The new B58 engine is a member of the new BMW modular engine family based around the half-liter cylinders, ranging from 1.5-liter turbo three -cylinder found in the MINI Cooper and BMW i8 to new 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder in the new European versions of the 320i and 330i. For now, however, the new 3.0-liter inline-six is the only member of the family found in a BMW in the US

As the outgoing engine, the new six uses a single turbocharger with Twin - turbine scroll. The turbo The new engine is slightly larger and BMW moved into a water-air intercooler to reduce the length of the plumbing and reduce turbo lag. Performance data take a bump at a nominal 320 horsepower and 330pounds-feet of twist. automatic transmission powers A ZF eight-speed rear wheels in the 340i and 340i xDrive four wheels. If you prefer to paddle your own, you can select a manual six toll-free option speeds.

player

2016 refresh (or Impulse life cycle as BMW calls it inexplicably) stick a fork in the hope that BMW plans to return the series 3 to how theE0 felt on the road, even if a new suspension mounts under the familiar sheetmetal. This is not a bad thing in my book. (Yes, I'm ready for the fork-wielding villagers miss the city.)

Acceleration is blistering if you equip the 340i with automatic transmission, running from 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds in a dedicated distributor model. Opt for the manual transmission can make you feel more connected to the car, but it will add over half a second to your 0-60 time, unless you are a professional driver. This puts the 340i ahead of the Audi S4 and Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG, and just a hair behind the new Infiniti Q50 Sport Red 400 depending on the tires of every vehicle and if they are equipped with all-wheel drive .

Our tester had the track handling package with optional premium tires, brakes and adaptive suspension M-Sport. This package allowed the 3665 sedan books to brake to a stop from 60 mph in an impressive 110 feet with little fade. The updated suspension significantly reduced the roll found in the 2015 model and firms up the ride in the process.

Even with the new suspension and steering, 2016 BMW 340i continues to show the face of the softer manufacturer. The 340i can accelerate like a M3 06 and brake as a lightweight MX-5, but it rises more like a Mercedes-Benz BMW than any of the last decade. The steering is precise with perfect weight, but there are precious few comments tires. Despite the hope that the new song suspension would reverse the Cadillac ATS or Lexus IS in terms of dynamics, the 340i is still a fast and comfortable daily driver.

When it comes to competition, things get complicated. The 340i is not the most direct competitor 350 or ATS 3.6 because the 328i is about as fast as its naturally aspirated V6 competition. Instead, the 340i is in the squad next up where you will find the new Audi S4 Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG Sport Red and Infiniti Q50 -. But underneath the Cadillac ATS-V, Mercedes-AMG C63 and BMW M3

That said, the BMW 340i positioned a little differently. From $ 46.795, the BMW undermines the Audi by $ 3000 and $ 4000 Mercedes. The big reason is the declared value; it is that the leap from 328i to 340i little change other than the engine. This is not the case with the Audi or Mercedes who get standard braking, suspension and trim level upgrades. S4 and C450 are thematically more similar to 340i optioned with either the M-Sport or track packet handling.

BMW also plays a different game when it comes to performance. Although you can get a six-speed manual in the S4 and the direction is more engaging than the 340i, there is no version with rear wheel drive. In addition, the weight distribution of the S4 is a challenge regarding the handling and makes the 340i feel agile in comparison. Meanwhile, Mercedes has a nicer cabin but designed seven-speed automatic in-house is not a team player, and the car is the isolated nature contradicts its performance mission. BMW is simply smoother and more comfortable than any of the competitors. Pitted against his peers, the 340i is as smug kid in gym class that does not break a sweat while other bust their back.

After a week with the 340i, I started drawing parallels to the Honda Accord in my head. (You can see it as positive or negative depending on your inclination.) The 340i does not score top marks in any field for me. Red Sport Q50 is faster, handles better ATS, the IS has better steering feel, the Q50 has more rear legroom, the C450 has a nicer interior, and the next XE is likely to be a matter scream. It is actually easy to be the best in a metrics such as acceleration. What is more difficult is to build a sedan that marks the second in almost all categories. As the Agreement, which is exactly what the 340i did. BMW has wisely turned the series 3 of a scientist in a polygraph.

I like the 3 Series for all the reasons "bad" according to a friend who let her go on E46 her cold body. I like well-cushioned road trip. I like the quiet cabin. iDrive is my favorite luxury infotainment system. I like the big back seat and the huge trunk. I also like the prodigious power line, and I appreciate the chassis setting that gives the crown handling Cadillac in exchange for a daily-driver friendly way highway. It is blasphemy to many BMW faithful, but it is also true. That said, if my money was on the line, I would take the least polished Infiniti Q50 Sport Red. Why? Because it is not as polished as the BMW. Go figure.
