2016 Hyundai Tucson (5 of 7)

When you're one of the largest automakers in the world, the bottom of which is a healthy period of growth US auto sales, and you can not collect sales gains ... well, it's time to reassess your strategy.

This is the situation in which Hyundai is.

After entering the US utility market in 00 with the Santa Fe, the Korean manufacturer has never fully developed solid line crossovers and SUVs that will excite convincing buyers. Instead, Hyundai has focused on building their Genesis sub-brand quasi-luxury compact car as they crank after subcompact car, and more when the non-utility volume was good. Now, not so much. Utilities are present and the future.

range of Hyundai's better, mind you, but there are still gaps. Compounding the woes sales of Hyundai offroader is its smallest offering - Tucson -. Wear age-not-the most flattering ways

A bit late to the party, Hyundai seeks to right the ship with a new Tucson. While the third-generation model looks good on the outside, it must be more than a pretty face if she wants to take the Japanese army CR-RAV and the like.

Exterior
Before enter the new Tucson, we'll talk about the second generation model, as it is essential to understand a very important aspect of the outgoing versions.

second-generation Tucson - bless his heart -. carries a fascia which is the embodiment of automotive cleft lip

When competition is oh-so-much more beautiful, it is no wonder that sales of Hyundai SUVs are down, down, down. Hyundai said a "proliferation of new models" of competitors is one of the reasons why their CUV sales are down 14.5 percent so far this year. All these new models are also more pleasing to the eye - by a considerable margin. - what the outgoing Tucson

However, the new Tucson is what happens when all doctors funded by UNICEF come to your village and fix any deformations

first, third-generation Tucson ditch its current generation Elantra line design and now sports a face closely resembling its big brother Santa Fe, is wearing a little suit trim around her decidedly cross bone.

is hexagonal front grille Hyundai that meets directly with the headlights is Ford Edge, Mazda CX-3 and others. the three bars extending through grid tie the new Tucson with Santa Fe, while the cut-headlight shape of this small model evokes a lighter character, more lively and active. Three flagship configurations - projector with LED accents and daytime runners, LED, Full LED lamps, HID lamps and complete with steerable beams -. Are available depending on trim

The profile body coating flows from the front bumper, follows the asymmetrical wheel wells wrapped around either 17- or 19-inch wheels, and finally made its way to the back without interruption. The bentline still appears slightly higher than the outgoing model, while the Hofmeister kink at the end is tighter and more aggressive instead of long and swoopy execution of the outgoing model. With an exterior designed in Europe, so do not surprising that there is some Germanic influence in the new ute cute '.

At the rear, the lighting shape and placement is almost identical to the Kia Sportage. This does not necessarily mean a bad thing - the Kia is a looker - but if Hyundai wanted something more distinct, they would have pushed their own design just a little bit further. On the other hand, the second generation of Tucson was separate foul and beautiful like an owl beat, so there's that.

2016 Hyundai Tucson Interior
Inside, the Tucson has made great progress in the quality of materials, but all is not perfect.

top-trim Limited examples of Tucson where I spent my day were equipped with leather seats, a full range of infotainment and plastic goodies were pleasant to the touch. However, while many scoff "Black Sea" Interior of the likes of BMW and others, nothing prepared me for the "single shade of charcoal" in our Tucson testers. Without notable brilliance, the the interior has an air of surrender to it. Each plastic board and leather, save the infotainment / surround wind and some of the brightest parts were the same, exact dull shade of gray. at least he does there was not 50.

that said, there are a lot of buttons that (almost) all directions and the infotainment system with Hyundai Blue Link is top. Heated seats are available for front and at the back, and broken chairs are available exclusively at the front. the driver seats and 10 channels 8 channels passengers are comfortable, as is to be expected in a high-trim supply, and the dashboard is simple but full featured with its color LCD screen of 4.2 inches seated between two large speed and tachometer dials

Improved NVH and safety are also in the most recent game plan ute that the panels interiors hide a high-strength steel use increased to stiffen the chassis rigidity .; front side airbags and curtain safety accident (knee airbags are missing, something Hyundai should consider reviewing in the future); and a new load path to the foot of the driver's side and crush protection.

Screen Shot 2015-07-21 at 11.23.15 AM This latest addition is interesting and comes frighteningly close to a "teaching to the test" philosophy.

The new small crash test overlap that took many manufacturers is a tough nut to crack, especially in smaller vehicles with less frontal volume. this load path helps to pass this test, but why Hyundai did not put on the passenger side and is disconcerting.

well, maybe not. As you see, the small overlap test is performed only on the driver's side. makes you think, right?

of course, the majority of small style overlap accidents are likely to occur on the side of the driver, but a charging path to the foot of the very probable passenger would not hurt.

Hyundai reached to clarify the passenger side also has a foot load path good for occupant protection. However, this has not been detailed in the presentation, the day of the training. Sorry for the confusion.

Infotainment
There is not much new to talk with the infotainment system for Hyundai. An improved user interface is displayed on a touch screen 8 inches and features Blue Link connected the characteristics of the manufacturer. A new addition is an integrated Yelp app that lets you show false restaurant recommendations in your area. Other characteristics of telematics such as startup notifications from the remote vehicle and maintenance of the car, are also included in the Blue Link service.

The audio quality in the top-trim Limited model is on par with others in its class, even without leverage well-known audio brand logos to affix the unit to speakers and head .

Training
under the new sheet metal is all new (Tucson) 1.6-liter turbocharged engine four cylinder direct injection and CVVT. With only 175 horsepower compared to 164 horsepower of the motor base, you would think the premium option is underpowered, and they might be a little to the right.

The application of the 1.6T 195 lb-ft of torque is the biggest news here and it is as you feel most on the dyno butt. However, in passing maneuvers, the force-fed mill does not inspire the same confidence in the driver as 2.0-liter EcoBoost Escape or even 2.5-liter, naturally aspirated, four-cylinder engine SKYACTIV found in the Mazda CX-5. He is competent, but a bit more movement would go a long way to widen the gap between the two plants of Tucson and make an offering top feel more special.

Sending power to the front or all four wheels 1.6T- powered models is a seven-speed DCT is incredibly smooth once you get there. After a standing start, there is only the slightest hiccup automatic-manual gearbox when he realizes that you request forward momentum. The SE model, powered by the 2.0-liter four-cylinder base, gets a six-speed automatic as the sole transmission. No textbooks here, people.

Together, the 1.6T and DCT offer better fuel economy than the base model only 2.0-liter four-pot. While the input engine delivers 26 mpg combined for front wheel drive models before, Sport and Limited trims with 1.6T get 27 mpg while the Eco models extend a tank even further to 29 mpg (Economy increased fuel is mainly down to tires, we were told, but there are other settings in the Eco model as well).

Tucson is equipped with selectable drive modes by the user, but you're just better to leave those alone. Nobody pushes their compact CUV around town in Sport mode unless :. 1) do not know what it does and 2) are too stupid to understand

If you do not know you might think you were driving in the Mazda CX-5 to the extent that the ride quality is concerned. Hyundai is finally (in the last two years) to start taking seriously suspension tuning to provide a more pleasant and comfortable ride. That said, it demolishes the hard-as-a-rock tower in the RAV4.

Our conduct has been mostly limited to straight, long roads of Minnesota and Wisconsin, but there was a strip of gravel thrown in for good measure. The dirt road - probably the sweetest gravel road in the known universe - did not provide much of a challenge for the utility. However, one thing is noticeable: he was almost dead quiet inside

Of course, you might hear the occasional piece of Bang gravel on the bottom side of Tucson, but you could also have a conversation without forcing your vocal cords [

As indicated above, the 1.6T could use a little more punch - or perhaps able to communicate the couple a little more to remember that it is the "premium" offer motor

Even with all the criticism. above, the Tucson is now a strong competitor - if for the style set in one day - compared to its predecessor. However, Hyundai will continue to beat the drum of the value and packaging, as they should. In no other use, especially the Mazda CX-5, you get that pure abundance vaunted equipment. If you are looking for value and choice (unless a manual transmission), this is the answer, and you need not sacrifice good looks for it.

Is that right sales at Hyundai ship? Here's another article entirely
