We recently reviewed 2016 Volvo XC0, expected long overhaul of the Volvo family transporter. First introduced as a 02 model, the XC0 was a teenager when he was eventually replaced. Curiously, it is a similar story with the Audi Q7.

In response to then-new Volvo XC0, Audi began developing the Q7 with seven seats in 02, which later hit the market in 05. It received a facelift in 09, but the basics Audi face slab remained. Eleven years later, and at about the same time that the new XC0, Audi Q7 eventually reinvented as a kind of soft-A8 road before.

Can it compete with the new XC0 for the hearts and minds of families luxury of mind?

Exterior
You'd be forgiven for thinking this Q7 is yet another refresh of the original model, as his likeness - the result of "unifying style brand" Audi - has historical roots. Even complete overhauls should stick to the "sausage different lengths" design philosophy.

The grille and headlights of the Q7 are more angular than before, giving the front end a certain masculinity necessary and taillights acquire new Audi Y light pipes fit. The overall effect is a sharp attractive lines found in the 2016 model without breaking any new ground.

There are not that SheetMetal that replaces Audi for the new Q7. The seven-seater is built on a new platform MLB 2 Audi, which was created for the Bentley Bentayga and the majority of future Audi models. Although the vast Bentley is the greatest expression of the MLB, 199.7 inches of length Q7 notably longer than the BMW X5 and only four inches less than the Escalade.

inside
Although the exterior is a variation on a theme, the interior is all-in on the latest gadgets - d a full-available cluster LCD instrument to a large touchpad for "finger writing" the entrance and more active safety gadgets than I care to name.

the overall look is a bit busy compared to the minimalist or even Volvo X5. The dashboard is crossed by a huge bank-style air vents after the Audi 5000 extending from the dashboard all the way to the passenger door.

new front seats Audi are more comfortable than the basic thrones in the BMW or Mercedes, while the headquarters level-up beats upscale options competition by a hair. That said, the new seat design in the XC0 carries this comfort, that we speak basic or optional seats.

When the Q7 shines is in its second row. It is enormous. Sporting a 40/20 / 40-split design as we see in Volvo, the seats offer a smidge more space and found my butt more comfortable. Compromise is a third row that is less comfortable than the XC0, although it is a substantial improvement on the way back to narrow the X5.

Solidifying the status of the Q7 as the alternative to a luxury minivan, you'll find five sets of locking anchors for child seats. In addition, the second row is wide enough to attach a Graco Classic Tour 50 seats in the middle and still return / fold the outer seats to jump back. This is important because the movement of the second line out-of-the-way is a two-step process more involved than the folding mechanism / slide in a single step, we see in Volvo models, Acura and Infiniti comparable.

Infotainment
2017 MMI takes to a new level. Using the same 12.3-inch LCD disco dash as the TT, the Q7 adds a front LCD 8 inches and center. Audi has decided to limit some of the features "virtual cockpit" seen in the TT, but the system works similarly as a whole. The LCD cluster offers a large screen with Google map satellite imagery and infotainment readings, but the parameters of the system and the car must be adjusted with the display in the dashboard.

Perhaps the biggest change is the addition of Apple and Android Auto carplay support. Without a touchscreen, these interfaces operate a little differently than in the mass-market sedans. Accordingly, it feels actually less polished than the implementation of the 2016 Agreement

audiophiles will be pleased to learn that the base audio system is a 10-speaker balanced configuration with a standard CD player. Our tester had the intermediate level, 19-speaker Bose system, which adds speakers in places you never thought you will find them. This is not the high-end system. This would be the speakers 23, 1,00-watt Bang & Olufsen mad for a cool $ 5000 on the Bose system.

Powertrain
Although we have said that a four-cylinder engine 2.0-liter turbo will eventually be the base engine, only engine at launch is a 3.0-liter V6 supercharged. Cranking out 333 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque, it exceeds the turbo 3.0-liter in the X5 and the four-banger turbo and supercharged Volvo. Mated to a ZF eight-speed automatic standard and Quattro all-wheel drive, the Q7 will tow up to 7,700 pounds when properly equipped.

player
With 333 horsepower and a ZF transmission coordinate delivery of power, you'd assume the Q7 would be intense, and you are right. Our tester looked sure to 60 miles per hour in 6.1 seconds, easily besting six-cylinder X5 and GLE base while linking with the lightest new MDX-speed equipped. What may surprise you is the proximity of the 2016 Volvo XC0 came -. Only 3 / 10ths slower

Quattro Audi integrates the center and front differentials in the case of transmission, the side effect of this is that the entire engine and torque converter in front of tower the front axle. This investment means that the Q7 has a greater percentage of its weight on the front wheels that virtually every rear-wheel drive competitor and, interestingly, the new XC0 as well. However, do not confuse the distribution of front-heavy weight with through the power of the front wheel. This AWD system sends most of the power to the rear wheels, unless necessary. The XC0 can never send more than 50 percent of its power to the rear wheels unless a front wheel slips, and the new SH-AWD system in the MDX is much less aggressive in the power transmission to the rear of what it was before, now default to using a front-wheel drive, unless you are really pushing hard.

When the new Q7 was launched, Audi trumpeted a significant reduction of 700 pounds empty weight. However, when the Q7 in America, it gained about 275 pounds back to the 2017 model, a cupcake away 5,000 pounds. This is a significant distance from the new XC0 to 4.394 pounds, or MDX to a relatively thin 4286. Although the Q7 has a strong rear bias power and our model was equipped in the direction of option rear wheels and wide tires 285 wide, the Q7 still felt big and heavy on twisty mountain roads. Our model was equipped with the optional adaptive air suspension which, like all pneumatic suspension makes the Q7 sensation "boatier" it would be otherwise. In contrast, the Volvo polarized front wheel feels agile and balanced in neutral handling situations. On the other hand, the rear-wheel steering makes easy work of parking maneuvers that would rotate in the Acura or Volvo multi-point.

The combined fuel economy EPA rates at 21 mpg, which is essentially the same as the XC0. However, probably due to the weight and overall design of transmission, we averaged 19.5 mpg -. Below what we saw in the Acura or Volvo

At $ 55.650 to start (including destination charge $ 950), the Audi is $ 100 more than a base X5 but it is much better equipped. In addition to the standard third row, the Q7 also features standard leather seats, all wheel drive and the climate control in three areas, making nearly $ 5,000 less than a comparable BMW equipped. The delta between the Q7 and the new three-line Mercedes GLS is likely to be $ 10,000 $ 15,000. The Q7 is faster to 60 mph than comparable German as well.

On the other side of the segment, the Acura MDX is a significant discount on Q7, but ZF auto nine speed is much less bright than the eight-speed in Q7. The MDX also feels less premium in general. Although a similar MDX is a discount of $ 9,000 on the Q7, the Audi is nearly $ 9,000 more enjoyable.

As expected, the toughest competitor for the Q7 is the new Volvo. The XC0 T6 AWD is $ 4,000 less than the Q7, is almost as fast, is a more effective hair and a more comfortable first and third rows. The design of the XC0 also strikes me refreshing in a sea of complicated Germanic themes. Although transmission of the Q7 is more my cup of tea very nervous four-pot Volvo, agile dynamics of the Volvo, more polite active driving assistants and lower price tag keep it in the first place for me. Second place is not a bad finish for the Q7, but our tester pushed the delta $ 4,000 between Audi and Volvo to $ 10,000, without adjustment for the leather dashboard and door panels that you will find in Swedish . With that kind of price difference, the Q7 may be the reduction of German, but the Volvo is the all around best people carrier.
