"Is" Going a Ford Fusion or Chevrolet Malibu? " he new Malibu? "

" Absolutely. I'll pull around. "

" This is not the new Malibu. "

" There is a 2016 . "

" There is a Malibu newer than that. We'll take a look. well, at least it is an LTZ. and I need for a quick trip to Pittsburgh and to back. What happens there. One last turn. As Thoreau said, we will try to be the new man in old clothes. "

" Thor? "

There was a last minute idea: take a Saturday to lead Powell sun, Ohio, where all the children are above average and there is no significant crime or unrest in a hundred years, despite almost everyone to be a super racist, ultra-violent supports Trump, in a small town just north of Pittsburgh. The goal: to see a man on a bicycle. The secondary goal. As head south of the big city and indulge in the combination-dinner-and-Kimpton-suite Ruths-Chris used repeatedly reference bourgeois diversion in my life otherwise empty

The Malibu LTZ, provided here with the "Eco" -spec four-cylinder, was a strangely appropriate vehicle for such a trip in the middle class of the medium. There was a long time in this country, maybe from 1946 or so all the way to the disappearance of the G-body Malibu in 1983, where the ownership of a Chevrolet midsize sedan fully loaded conferred a kind single respectability on a young executive or suburban dad. This meant that you enjoyed the finer things, but did not care gingerbread. Think of the message Camry or Highlander XLE property sends today - "I could probably offer a Lexus, but I do not care to." - And you get the idea

Of course there there has been a long time that the Malibu had a reputation other than "sled location" or maybe the new car will change this "buy-here-pay-here."; I spent some time in a Malibu brand new car release in California last month and was impressed. It looks a bit like a final generation Chrysler 0, but that agrees with me because I always dug how the Chrysler 0 looked. The problem, not to point too fine on it, is how you get people to read the label after 20 years of cars that were occasionally the standards set by Honda and Toyota.

Let's start the party subjective impressions of this review by a completely unfair conclusion, but nevertheless precise: I'd rather have this Malibu LTZ that base Hyundai Sonata. Not fair at all, right? Chevy stickers for nearly eight great addition to Hyundai. Moreover, this car was born to have cash on the hood. Your mileage may vary.

My mileage is not particularly good. To get to my new bike, I had to start by covering 170 miles on the highway. I never exceeded 80 miles per hour and does not really show any symptoms of being in a hurry, but the "Bu struggled to provide 29.5 mpg self-reported. In the same situation, an agreement four-cylinder gets easily 35. Hell, my Accord V6 coupe can return 30-31. So the badge "Eco" on the back is a more pious than the actual result reflection.

On the roll, the LTZ is a nice place to be. Heated seats have been well reviewed by my companion, whose last recorded words were it falls into an active volcano would be "It's just a little cold here." The stereo is correct if not beautiful, helped by the lack of respectable road and wind noise. The dark faux wood does not fool anyone, but the overall quality of the lining is much better than other Malibus I drove this generation. There is an expansion and competent motorway car which has an aura of the overall quality and acceptable materials choice.

Once I got to the back roads north of Pittsburgh, however, I am for a surprise. Both in the sense that the roads were surprisingly good, whipping up and down and around a spectacular hilly region, and a true love of the Malibu spirited driving means. Even the normally warm Ecotec seemed a little better than I remembered, although the Tiptronic mode, controlled by a button on top of the joystick, just rest stupid. The brakes do not fade, while management was both sensitive and communicative by class standards. You can have a little fun in this car. Perhaps because the wheelbase is so short, perhaps because the LTZ gives you some better wheels and tires that run-of-the-mill Malibus get. Whatever the reason, I had no trouble making the almost shocking pace on both channels.

After picking up my bike, I headed south to the Hotel Monaco on cruise control - in every sense of the word. It was the most relaxing Chevrolet I drive a long time. My companion was not as relaxed. "I do not trust the start-stop when making a left turn in a fire," she complained, and I could not really blame him. It's annoying to have the engine die when you plan a tour through some lanes of the city. The solution is to give a bit of press brake and catch, which triggers the backup engine, and then make your turn. That said, hitchhiking never misbehaved function. Even the sound of the starter, that I remember from previous Malibus as catastrophic and troubling, seemed better insulated.

TTAC readers long drive or front-wheel fanciers Malibu - this is the Venn diagram there? - To remember that this generation of Malibu rectified the lack of space in the trunk of his predecessor by moving four-inch wheelbase of the trunk. How nice to see that my bike fit easily there, although it would fit in an Accord or Camry. It is not as nice to look behind the seat of my driver and see the value of about three fingers in the gap between the backrest and the lower beam of the rear bench. This car would have been better as a coupe; look mailed-fist to the front end prognathic serve a better cut and it would also prevent anyone from getting the idea that they would be comfortable in the back seat of a Malibu.

The return to Columbus the next day was, as they say, a breeze, helped in part by the best places I've lived in a GM car lately. I returned Malibu that night and gave him absolutely no thought whatsoever until it was time to write this review. The truth is that I want the LTZ for what it does well: highway driving, the comfort of the front seat, low noise. It is a good example of how a few minor improvements and some additional costly options can make a much better car. When I got an LS there two years, I hated it. I do not hate this car. It is the opposite of the Sonata just before I drove, which was a good car unlovable done by excess cost reduction. This is an indifferent car is acceptable sound insulation and heavy feeling of control.

The funny thing, though, is that you can use the same phrase to describe what G-body 1982 Malibu. As Iraqibu, it was catastrophic. With all the checked boxes on the order form, it was a pretty decent store brand version of a Buick Century. This is to be sufficient to move the metal. In 2016, it is not. Therefore, I can not love this run-out LTZ, even though I can hear myself think on the highway and I can distract myself a bit on the backroad. It is just too fundamentally flawed to the unnecessary stop-start with short wheelbase. The new Malibu is better than this one. Which is good, because it needs to be desperate.
