It is easy to get caught up in the hyperbole BMW-Mercedes-Audi. These manufacturers in exchange superlatives spec generational battles for supremacy which, in all reality, will not matter when it comes to most of these buyers to pull the proverbial trigger.
In many ways, the Cadillac ATS is left in the cold. He has no history, the theater or the marketing machine that the 3 Series and C-Class beat us over the head with every day.
In fact, when Cadillac announced that he would head over vaunted cars, most people laughed as long as it took for them to drive one. Then it became very real. Although ATS is competing with the Germans on the price, he also competes in capacity. The foundations are rock solid. The engine range is comparable. And the ATS-V performance is really damn good.
In 2016, little has changed with the ATS, but gradual improvements in domestic technology and its high-end motor bring even closer drive to be on par with - or better than some case - .. its German counterparts
and for many people, this will be an angular shaped pill hard to swallow for the future
outside
Less than words could and should be written on the "art and science" Cadillac's approach to external design. the sheet in the ATS particularly in his grill, is a cold approach, hard to design the geometry car and that will not be confused with any other brand anytime soon.
It is easy to reprimand ATS to be too harsh, angular and progressive, but compared to others in the segment - ahem, Audi A4 - at least it is something . After looking on 2016 Cadillac ATS-V, the ATS begins to make sense. Compared to the nostrils and aggressive front fascia on the ATS-V, the hood lines of normal sedan and vertical LED lamps dating back to the front wheel arches look more subtle and more acceptable than first impressions.
At the rear, the "mini wings" dual exhaust and outboard attach the package with a false ideal short. I nitpicking, but I would say that the rear end is symmetrical if it seems unusually cold. Relative to the front end, the tail is free of expression or the actual style.
Compared to the 3 Series, the ATS present an alternative reality. The skin of the BMW is stretched over his muscular frame, while the sheet metal Caddy falls flat down his angular body. Put simply, the door spandex 3 Series and the ATS has a strong suit -. It is in the eye of the viewer to determine the approach
Interior
full disclosure: inside the ATS is not my cup of tea, and that's just how I feel . Based on what I know ATS represents a giant leap for General Motors deviation in finishing the interior. The fine pores open wood accents blend harmoniously into a finished dashboard suede, and the ergonomics of the ATS have easily beaten the series 3.
Our tester, wearing skins Kona finished leather the jet inside accents, represented the best combination for our inner dark blue metallic exterior finish. The subtle and harmless swatches represented the ideal combination for the real world. I can not say the same for light and medium Platinum packages inside cashmere; Red Obsession Hue and Majestic Plum outside Metallic paint - but that's just me
The interior of the ATS may seem narrow compared with a wheelbase of 108 inches .. The ATS is actually a bit longer than the series 3 and 2 inches shorter than the C-Class, but feels much smaller than both. 10.4 cubic trunk are smaller than 12.8 cubic Merc, and it is beyond my comprehension why. Rear passengers do not benefit from the ATS dimensions -. 3 sports series nearly 2 inches more legroom for rear passengers than 33.5 inches rear passengers assigned to ATS
On the surface, it seems that the padded sport buckets Cadillac are to blame; bulky upholstered thrones are comfortable but seem larger and heavier than the Rocky Mountains. The chairs are comfortable and supportive, but to find a neutral, comfortable sitting position was difficult -. The steering wheel felt just too high
Infotainment
Including Car an Apple game was among the biggest improvements over last year's model . The system is simple and user-friendly and, I believe, a step forward for automotive manufacturers in their search for something that tries to relieve drivers of their obsession with their mobile phones.
The imitates ordinary model of the Apple iPhone interface with phone, Messages, Cards, Music, Now Playing, Audiobooks, Podcasts and (at least on my phone) MLB At Bat apps for drivers use. Most applications, including phone messages and immediately invited to ask Siri what you trying to do, instead of allowing the drivers to scroll endlessly through contacts and messages.
Call of the Maps app brings back familiar Apple (and horrible) user interface, but does not allow drivers to pinch or zoom. To his credit, he immediately set up my home address and gave me an ETA (with real-time traffic) wherever I went.
The music was perhaps the most familiar and dangerous carplay app had to offer. The interface offered artists, albums, playlists and everything else found Apple's Music app, and quite often find what I was looking for a considerable scrolling necessary and fidgeting with the screen . Put simply: I could have found the fastest music on my phone, which felt against-intuitive
carplay represents a step forward for carmakers to adapt to something most drivers already know :. Their phones. If there is a disadvantage of such an intuitive infotainment system, it is the controls mounted on the steering wheel can not come close. Navigating the same menus and controls on the steering wheel was significantly different from the carplay system and it is not something I recommend for someone like my dad aka the buyer typically Cadillac.
Powertrain
the new 3.6-liter V-6 is another significant improvement from 2015 and modest bump power (333 hp against 321 hp) are not the real story. The LGX V-6 may close two of its cylinders to save some longer legs in highway driving and it helps. Our observed mileage of 24.5 mpg in combined driving was spoiled by traffic Downtown Denver almost constant. (Dear Texans: .. Please go home Signed, Everyone)
Shifting between motivation of four and six cylinder was transparent and often, through our right foot forward who wanted to test the system cylinder deactivation
hastily V-6 ran up to its limit of 7000 rpm, although his growl was not as sound as the contribution to listen to the ATS-V . The V-6 has never let us down, even if it felt like he was the victim of an automatic 8-speed anxious too forcefully and often shifted the car in a gear higher and higher.
Our tester was rear-wheel drive only - and in a perfect world, they would all. In fact, many buyers will opt for the full transmission of the wheel of Cadillac and that preference is understandable for cold weather climates. But if I could, I propose the Pepsi Challenge with winter tires and to RWD and AWD all seasons to potential buyers - this combination is just too fun
Cadillac Magnetic Ride Control makes an appearance now 3.6. ATS -liter car with the premium package and it is wonderful, but more on that later.

As the new kid on the block report, ATS has the unenviable task of having to gain ground on the Germans. The Caddy has to be better, it also cost less not only
The ATS sedan with a 3.6-liter V-6 is fully $ 17,000 less than an ATS-V and it shows. this car is completely different than his performance variant and not to be confused with her - ever. (I'm not so sure that the last-gen M3 and 335i were so different, by the way.)
Magnetic Ride Control ATS ATS stiffens to heroic proportions and keeps the car flat and balanced, neutral and ready for more. When combined with a strong V-6 and spun with paddle shift, the ATS can break bread with a German ilk. I firmly believe that.
But as the sport disappears and the road is on suspension stiffened becomes too hard and too uninhabitable for long journeys. There is no middle ground in the sedan: either you are dealing with the sluggish acceleration and displacement of "Touring" or walk bone breaking semi customizable suspension and throttle response would go a long way here
"Sport.".to $ 55,430, the ATS is running dangerously close to the price of $ 60,465 from the ATS-V, but it's hard to imagine they will overlap.
At its most expensive, the ATS is a serious and. significant contender in the luxury sport compact crown Germans
And it will be a hard pill for us all owners to swallow
