There have been a few weeks of stress, but when I remember my children and grandchildren are healthy, everything else is gravy.
long-term test of TTAC 2015 Honda Accord EX came to a screeching to 7,987 miles stopping just after starting a left turn across three lanes of traffic stopped south of a red light on Groesbeck, a main road in the Macomb County on the east side of Detroit.
I was going to a music store, but could not remember exactly where he was, that landed me traveling in the wrong direction on Groesbeck. To make a U-turn, I arrived on the turn lane left of the road to seven lanes to turn into some business facade.
Maybe I relied too much on the motorcyclist who stopped to I turn and waves me through, or maybe the guy driving an Econoline 250 for a workshop marine engine repair was going so fast in the right lane that was not there when I arrived, but it was definitely there when the nose of my Fit filled in this way. The truck ripped the plastic fascia of the Honda. When the metal hit metal, Fit support bumper tore a large gash the length of the side of the Econoline, ultimately chewing a piece of his rear tire.
At first, I do not think it's a serious accident, but there was a strong smell, the air bag in the steering wheel was gone, and something was clearly pushed into the engine and making an oscillation noise. As I pulled into the driveway and tried to gather my wits, a nice lady working for Honda asked me, through the infotainment system with Hondalink, if I was okay and if I had need her to call emergency services.
The impact does not seem so bad. I do not think that the attitude of the car on the same road collision changed, and I was not seriously injured. I had an abrasion on my left hand and wrist of the airbag, or perhaps was a slight burning of the propellant, and I later noticed some pain in the lower back, but I have a bad back and it could have been unrelated to the accident. The other driver said he was not injured.
A torque Fraser police responded, as did the deputy sheriff of Macomb County. I called AAA, the insurance for the car.
The Fit was funded by a promissory note with the mother bank and protect its assets, it was titled in his name and insured under its policy Automobile Club, where she was a member and pay for full coverage of collision for decades. I think she has assured its cars in AAA since 1960, and I would not be surprised if the total of the premiums paid in reach six figures. AAA made a lot of money doing business with our family.
I drive for more than 40 years, but it was only the second time I seriously wrecked car. I submarined a van stopped at a traffic light (also on Groesbeck, maybe I should stay on my side of the city) there a few years ago, which required the work on my old Saturn about $ 2,500 worth. Immediately after the accident, watching the Fit, I thought the damage would be about double. The headlights and the radiator had to be replaced, but it does not appear to be structural damage other than the bumper support. The hood was crunched and the two wings were a bit askew.
The cops called for a tow truck, the first driver loaded the Econoline on the set, then hung up the Fit's elevator behind the bed A tow yard, I recovered some items from the car that I bought when I stopped shopping trip and waited for a ride to my son.
ME was cited for failure to obtain a right of way, but it will likely be rejected because the other guy is not likely to occur on the date of my court. To add insult to injury, the city of Fraser sent me a bill for $ 18.30 for non-residents emergency services. Essentially, they charged me for the time of the cop who delivered me a ticket. The notice says they charge 12% interest per year. I would just pay $ 17.31 for it and leaving 99 cents on the account. When 12% of this $ 0.99 adds to something meaningful, the administrative costs of the realization of this account and send me regular bills will probably eat as $ 18.30 - and I'll be sure to let people run Fraser that
Yeah, my old psychologist called me an "against-puncher." Oh well.
When I told Mark Stevenson my boss here at TTAC, I totaled the Fit, his response was "This will make a great article." Thank you, Mark. my life is not complete without hindering me in front of two million monthly page views.
in fact, I had already planned to write about it. When I cleaned the car, I brought my 3D platform for recording the wreckage for posterity. in recent years Honda has promoted the use of what it calls Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body design. ACE was introduced there about 10 years and is intended to absorb collision energy in a way that allows cell unaffected passengers and the other less damaged vehicle. It uses four different grades of steel in the unibody - mild steel, high strength steel, advanced high-strength steel and ultra high strength steel - to keep the strong things where they need to be rigid and flexible where they need to crush. The latest development in the architecture of the ACE selectively tempers different sections of a hot stamped parts high strength steel. This allows the sections to be softer, which reduces the number of parts and weight.
Although I said that the impact was not severe, which was a subjective characterization. Objectively, the collision was severe enough to bend the frame members and the total of the car. Walking around the wrecked Fit, I checked the gaps on the panel doors. Other than the airbag deployed, the hood and rear pillar, the car was in perfect condition. As far as I can tell, ACE works. My Fit totaled, but I agree. I will be happy to eat the sauce.
It works well enough that I will keep a record of the VIN Fit, because with only 8,000 miles on the powertrain and a body largely intact, I'm almost certain that he will return on the road with a salvage title.
I will make long-term test account 2015 Honda Fit EX 6MT of CAPD, remix, once I get back from Texas.
